Rafaél Leon René born March 30, 1927 in Los Angeles (California) is one of those unjustly neglected musical figures of the Rock & Roll & R&B years, although he was the backbone of the Class records label. Rafaél "Googie" René remains a figure of the underground among amateurs and collectors, until the release of the CD Wham Bam at Ace records in 2004. Son of Leon René (1902 - 1982) composer and owner of the Exclusive and Excelsior labels records founded in 1940 with his brother Otis who was responsible for excelsior publicity and also composer. Rafaél Leon René and nicknamed Googie because it is the first word he said as a child. Before graduating from Dorsey High School in the Baldwin Hills suburb of Los Angeles, Googie was already showing his desire to follow in his father's footsteps. He studied the piano, composed songs, and gained some first-hand studio experience, when his father invited him to the recording sessions. But before Googie could be more involved, he had to serve in Europe for the US military. On his return in 1950, he found his father's Excelsior records label bankrupt, but enterprising Leon René created a new label, Class records, of which Googie had become the main responsible. He made his first single end of 51 'Class records series 500 (4 issues for this series) because after the bankruptcy of Excelsior, Leon and Googie, chose to start quietly and made an arrangement with the Bihari brothers, to release the Class productions. on their Modern and RPM records labels until September 1956. Class records really took off with the new 200 series, including the 2nd recording (Class 201) and "Sad Fool" by The Rollettes (AKA The Dreamers) whose members are: Gloria Jones , Annette Williams and Fanita Barrett, coupled with Wham Bam, a Rock instrumental, which will be the start of a long series, played by the Combo which is composed mostly of the cream of the West Coast session musicians, including saxophonists Plas Johnson and Clifford Scott, Earl Palmer on drums and guitarists Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Jimmy Nolen and Rene Hall. The instrumentals range from the musical trend of the 50's, Rock, Boogie Woogie, Jump, Latin, up to the 60's Soul / Groove. On some tracks, Googie is on the piano, and sometimes on the organ, but most of the time leaving the keyboards to the other members of the Combo. Googie was in charge of the creativity of the Class label, which allowed him to develop his own compositions, arrangements (keyboard) and production techniques, as demonstrated by the quality of the recordings present on the Wham Bam cd, ranging from Jump Wham 50s West Coast bam, 60s Groovy Ramsey Lewis style. Googie always has the latest Hits in mind when he enters the studio.
GOOGIE RENE - FLAPJACKS CS-LP-200 - 1963

His influences and inspirations are very varied. From a Rock & Roll perspective, the most interesting recordings are from 1956, 1959, particularly "Wiggle Tail Pt. 1 & 2, Class 221," Big Time / Midnigth "Class 205," Break It Up / Side track " Class 208 and "Rock A Boogie / Beautiful Weekend" Class 212. In the 60s Googie turned towards more Jazz / Soul, Groove and sometimes Funky music. Meanwhile, Leon René created a new label in 1959, Rendez- You records, based in Los Angeles, with Rod Pierce and Gordon Wolf, to publish Pop music. His greatest success being "Bumble Boogie / Nut Rocker" recorded with the house group named B Bumble & The Stringers, whose members are composed of: Ernie Field (piano / organ) Rene Hall (guitar) Plas Johnson (sax) Rene Calander (bass) and Earl Palmer (drums) rendez-vous records closed in 1963. The 60's brought us some superb instrumentals Soul / Groove dedicated to dance: "Smokey Joe's La, La" "Chica Boo", "Merci Merci" "Bossa Baby", "The sl ide Pt. 1 & 2 ”among others, and even an instrument (Monster type)“ The Chiller ”. In 1962, Googie also recorded some titles on the label Kapp records, of Davis Kapp, brother of Jack, owner of Brunswick and Decca records. During the 60's, in exactly 66 minutes, Googie set up a new label - New Bag records, he recorded there in 1967 the superb dance "Keep The Soul Baby" a la Ramsey Lewis! He also produced 2 singles for The Count Yates, composed of a member of the 50s band 'The Premiers, accompanied by The Rhythm Crusaders. Leon & Googie are often credited with the compositions, but many titles are signed by a certain Jeanne Vikki, but who is this mysterious Jeanne Vikki? just a signature for these titles? no "physical" trace of this Jeanne, probably a nickname !! Googie sues in the 70's for some.

GOOGIE RENE - FLAPJACKS CLASS CS-LP-200 - 1963

GOOGIE RENE - FLAPJACKS CS-LP-200 - 1963

GOOGIE RENE - FLAPJACKS CS-LP-200 - 1963
