Electric Jive: The Huntley Archive
Keeping Time: Photographs and Cape Town Jazz Recordings – 1964 – 1974
WELCOME
Ian Bruce Huntley captured more than 1500 South African jazz-related images and recorded and preserved in excess of 56 hours of reel-to-reel audio of jazz performed in Cape Town over the period 1964-1974. This site aims to make Ian’s jazz archive accessible, opening a window on a little-known era, an ‘underground’ scene that persisted in creative defiance of all that grand apartheid threw at it.
Many of the musicians Ian worked with have passed on, and a large number were never afforded the opportunity to record (whilst others remain woefully under-documented). Combined with the loss to exile of yet more key South Africans in the country’s jazz history, and the general inaccessibility of records that do exist, this collision of circumstances means little archival material is available, further limiting our understanding of a challenging era of artistic discipline and persistence.
Ian is the copyright holder of both the photographs and recorded music shared on this site. He has decided to make these archives accessible through Electric Jive so that interested musicians, scholars, and fans of South African jazz can freely access, engage and celebrate the achievements of a generation of this country’s musicians: to maintain memory through sharing pictures, sounds and stories that might otherwise become lost.
Electric Jive has since April 2012 been sharing a number of Ian’s recordings and photographs on our regular blog. You can read the May 2012 announcement of the Huntley Archive via Electric Jive here. In November 2013 the book “Keeping Time” was published. The book contains a selection of 120 of Ian’s images, each one painstakingly restored. You can download a .PDF version of the book from this site. On these blog pages you can also view the pictures, read the book’s essays, and explore the full audio archive which is available for free download.
We shall update and expand this archive site as we go along. There are a number of tunes that Ian recorded that remain unidentified – and quite probably some that are incorrectly identified. Please do feel free to leave comments, corrections and memories.
